10 Effective Tips - How To Care For Ripped Jeans

They're our joy and pain: there is joy because they're beautiful to wear and, actually, are great for every season (yes, even in Winter, wearing them with stockings); pain, alas, because taking care of your ripped jeans it's not so easy. However, there are some little tips you need to keep in mind if you want your ripped jeans to have a long life. Go on reading to know what you have to do for your ripped jeans care :)

1. "DOUBLE UP"

If you like those jeans a lot and, above all, they fit perfectly on you, you should consider buying two of them when you're shopping. The cost will be double, but you'll give a sort of "double life" to the item. You'll have two pairs of the same jeans and you'll be able to wear it practically non-stop! Plus, if you shop responsibly with sales, you'll spend a lot less: for this purpose, both this article and the sales section, will help you :)

You could also buy just one jeans and turn a pair of simple ones that you already own, into ripped jeans like the ones you just took. It's really simple, in this article I have already included a video tutorial to create DIY ripped jeans.

2. REINFORCE

You should consider reinforcing them before wearing them for the first time: some are already reinforced, some are not, but you can do it yourself! If you're familiar with needles and threads, you can insert a few patches inside the item, placing them on the rip edges. Be careful that they aren't visible from the outside.

If you don't have much manual skills, you can reinforce your ripped jeans with patches which must be attached with an iron: you can cut them into the needed sizes and then fix them with ironing.

If you don't feel confident about these methods, there's an even easier one: the beloved clear nail polish! You can apply a small amount of it on the edges, being careful not to stain the item: doing so, the rips will become more resistant.

3. PREPARE THE OUTFIT IN ADVANCE

Prepare your outfit in advance, and check on your jeans: if you notice that something's wrong (the zip doesn't close properly, a button should be sewn on and similar things), you'll have the time to fix it. If you need to iron it, do it the previous day too, so you'll have everything ready when needed  :)

4. CONSIDER THE SITUATION

Are you sure it's appropriate to wear them on that particular day? If you're sure that you're not going to do any kind of activity which could stress the jeans, such as sports, cycling, running, then wear them! Otherwise, wear something else, unless you have a place to change your clothes before doing one of those activities.

5. DON'T RUSH

Wear your jeans withouth being in a hurry! You will avoid accidentally putting your foot in the rips. Ripped jeans should always be worn barefoot in order to avoid any damage. Plus, it would be wise to finish the look with accessories in the end, as to prevent bracelets and rings from getting caught in the fabric.

6. BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU SIT DOWN

You should be careful even after you leave your home: bracelets and rings we talked about earlier, but also bag buckles and similar, could damage your denim while you're walking or sitting; about that, if you sit and cross your legs on top of one another, or if you sit at a table, be careful: you could accidentally touch with your legs under the table and if the surface below is rough, it could ruin the fibers.

 7. BE CAREFUL WHEN EATING OR DRINKING

You have to remember that denim (and especially ripped jeans that are more delicate and tend to get damaged more easily) don't need frequent washing! They are made to be washed as infrequently as possible, so try not to spill drinks or dirty them with food. If it happens, however, try to treat only the stained part without rubbing. If you really can't avoid washing, use the right methods.

8. WASH THEM THE RIGHT WAY

The best way to wash jeans is definitely by hand. Honestly, I prefer to do this with them turn inside-out and, in addition, with the zip closed in order to prevent it from getting caughts in the fibers while I leave the denim to soak. I put them in water for a while, along with laundry soap and sometimes a delicate sanitizer. I move them gently from time to time, taking off any ring or bracelet before putting my hands in water, and then I rinse them the same way. Once the soap residues have been released, do not squeeze them! It's better to leave them hanging in the washroom or on a basin; sometimes I also use a little trick! Do you remember my Instagram post where I talked about cashmere? Well, it's THAT little trick :D

If you really can't avoid washing your jeans in the washing machine, you should be careful:
  1.  first of all, also in this case (or better still, especially in this case) you have to turn your jeans inside-out and close the zip.
  2. Always read the label! Some kind of denim may require additional care.
  3. Obviously, don't add bleach, because you could risk discoloring or staining them. Furthermore, bleach is also harmful because it weakens the fabric.
  4. You have to be careful not to wash them together with pieces that could tangled up, so items with studs, buckles and so on.
  5. Another way to stay safe during the wash cycle is to place them into a fairly large wash bag.
  6. Always use delicate washing programs and therefore a rather low water temperature.

9. STORE THEM IN THE RIGHT WAY

Is it better to fold jeans or hang them? The way to store them is also important to keep your ripped jeans in good condition! Personally, I hang them individually in my wardrobe, keeping them away from items with studs, buckles and so on. Actually, you can also fold and store them in a dresser if it's better for you.

10. REMEDY

Are your jeans damaged anyway? Even if you apply all those tips, your jeans could "fall from grace", especially due to the time. The hems and the knee areas usually wear out more easily then the rest, despite your care, and you can't fix a ripped jeans anymore. What can you do? Give them a second life! Turn them into shorts, hair accessories, you could create a bag made from old jeans. You might even get patches from them and add these patches to another pair, in order to create something unique (among other things, patchworks are a must for this Fall! I'm talking about this here). I'm very tempted to write a post about some old jeans hacks, with a few little ideas and tutorials. Something like "Old Jeans: Creative Ways To Reuse Them". Would you like it? This is all you need to know to take care of your ripped jeans! There are, actually, so many efforts that you should do; is it worth the trouble? I believe so! This kind of items is an investment in terms of time and money too, of course, but if you know how to keep them in good condition, you may be able to use them for years! However, if you feel it's not worth it, then I suggest you choose another kind of denim, which requires less care :)
