Here we are with body shapes, and this time the protagonist is the inverted triangle! If you've seen the previous post of the same series, you an easily identify its features; however, if you haven't read it or don't know what body shape you have, I suggest you to read it here! Then, go to the article which interests you the most :) Ready?

INTRODUCTION

The inverted triangle is the shape we usually find in many sportswoman: the upper part of the body is more developed than the lower one. The woman with this kind of body tends to accumulate extra pounds on her shoulder, breast and back. Obviously, her legs and hips are her strong points!

As in the triangle, there is a disproportion between the upper and lower body, but in the opposite way: in fact, in this case the part to be enhanced is certainly the second; on the contrary, the first one needs to be harmonized. So, you have to mark the waistline while focusing the attention on your best qualities: you can do that either by creating volume from the hips down or trying to resize from the waist up.

DRESS: TIGHT SKIRT AND LOOSE TOP

One of the best outfits for the inverted triangle is surely the dress with the loose top and the tight skirt, to highlight the legs which, let's remember, are the strong point! Always prefer high waisted items than low ones, they suit you better and should be your first choice. If you wanna be on the safe side, opt for dark colours for the top and patterns or lighter tones for the bottom. Applications are fine too - you can afford them ;) By the way, the mid-thight lenght is great for you, so uncover those legs! However, absolutely not to dresses without or with thin straps, which put too much emphasis on shoulders, as well as high-necked ones!

CROSS-NECK DRESS

Same advice as before, better to choose short, waisted kind of dress with straps. There is only one difference: the crossed neckline slender the chest. If you can, always opt for dark colours for the top and light ones or pattern for the hip area.

TOP

The minimize-the-upper-body rule is always valid, so absolutely try to avoid oversized or baggy clothes, as well as high-necked ones. Go with simple, not too elaborate items. Stuff that suit you the best are definitely raglan sleeves tees or blouses, but batwing ones are great too! It's better to prefer soft fabrics. I know there will be lots of women with this kind of body who wouldn't even dream of wearing a shirt, but... have you ever thought about wearing a men's shirt inside pants? You can also pair a sash belt to give more structure to it ;)

SKIRT

There are no restrictions! You can play around as you like :) The only advice I can give you is to stay on the mini kind of lenght, it's perfect for you.

PANTS

You can wear what you want, as just as skirts! Shorts, skinny, cigarette pants and even flared jeans look great on you, but avoid wide legs pants: they don't give your legs the right justice!

COAT/JACKET

Don't go with too long or double-breasted kind of  outerwear, they don't suit you. You can choose instead quite soft fabrics, which accompany your shapes; waisted ones are perfect. The trench coat is fine as jackets (always short kind, to highlight the lower body).

To recap:

  • Create volume in the upper part of the body
  • Minimize the disproportion of the upper one
  • Enhance legs, hips and waist
  • To stay on the safe side, choose bright colours and pattern for skirts or pants and darker tones and simple style for tops
  • Prefer minis to long or longuette kind of skirts
  • Avoid strapless tops or thin straps or even high-neck
  • Try wearing men's shirt inside pants

  2. The wording is confusing and information inaccurate. Inverted triangles CAN wear wide leg pants, it balances the wide shoulders.

    1. Hi :)

I don't agree with your words: legs are the inverted triangle's strong point, so it's a shame to hide them behind a pair of wide leg pants. It's better to chose flared ones, in order to give importance to the legs and balance the upper body with the right top at the same time.

      Regards! :)

  3. I agree with the article. Wide leg pants just add to the width, except if wide leg stops at the narrowest point above ankle. Even then, flair is so much better for inverted triangle. If i wear fitted jeans with a flair leg, then my "legs" are still narrowest point then a nice flair at the ankle gives balance to my wide shoulders. It is especially true when I am also heavy in the chest.
